Start your sustainability journey – even if you're not (yet) subject to CSRD

With growing attention on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) topics, more and more stakeholders expect companies to be transparent about their sustainability efforts — even when they are not (yet) legally required to do so. The Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME) offers small and medium-sized enterprises a simplified, practical way to start reporting on their sustainability performance.

What is VSME?

The VSME standard has been developed by EFRAG as part of the broader European sustainability reporting framework. It provides a simplified, voluntary reporting framework for SMEs that are currently outside the scope of the CSRD but still wish to meet growing demands for sustainability transparency — from customers, investors, supply chain partners, and other stakeholders.

By using the VSME standard, companies can proactively organize their ESG data, identify relevant sustainability topics, and prepare for potential future reporting obligations.

What is the VSME?
Why the VSME?

Why is VSME relevant for your company?

Even if your organization is not yet subject to mandatory reporting under the CSRD, voluntary sustainability reporting offers several important benefits:

  • Early preparation: Build internal capacity for data collection and reporting before sustainability reporting becomes mandatory.
  • Respond to stakeholder demands: Demonstrate responsibility to clients, investors, and business partners who increasingly expect sustainability transparency.
  • Competitive advantage: Position your company as a forward-thinking, responsible organization.
  • Simplified approach: The VSME standard provides a lighter, accessible framework compared to the full CSRD requirements.
For who is the VSME?

Who can use the VSME standard?

The VSME standard is specifically designed for:

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are not yet subject to CSRD
  • Companies that want to meet customer or supply chain requirements
  • Organizations that want to prepare voluntarily for future regulations
